Both organizations are excellent resources for destination information in an unfamiliar location; however, each provides its own unique benefits to meeting professionals.
Convention & Visitors Bureaus (CVBs) are not-for-profit organizations that are generally funded by local hotel occupancy taxes. They are frequently membership driven and represent area hotels, convention centers, venues, restaurants, and other tourism related industries.
Destination Management Companies (DMCs) are professional services companies possessing extensive local knowledge, expertise and resources, specializing in the design and implementation of events, activities, tours, transportation and program logistics. They contract with vendors directly and handle the onsite logistics for busy meeting professionals who are then free to focus their time and resources on their meeting objectives.
The ultimate goal of CVBs and DMCs is similar – to provide meeting professionals with the resources they need to execute successful meetings, conferences and conventions in a particular destination. Whereas a CVB has a vast database of potential vendors/members, DMCs focus on developing strong relationships with select vendors who have been extensively vetted. Thanks to their problem-solving, risk-management, logistics and destination expertise, DMCs provide their clients with an added level of service – providing creativity, peace of mind and security while attending to all the details.
Accredited DMCs are members of their local CVBs.
